The Ultimate Competition Sock, Peddies by Noble Outfitters

They say give a girl the right pair of shoes and she will conquer the world and this is exactly how I feel about my beautiful made to measure competition boots by Celeris however what is underneath can be equally as important for us equestrians for many reasons, comfort, fit, style and maybe a little bit of luck?

Being a creature of habit - yes you can laugh - I have separate socks for yard days, training days, competition days based on their performance, thickness, style and what footwear I'll have on because the fluffy ones I wear under my wellies will never have the joy of seeing inside my brilliant made to measure boots...stretch them?? I'd rather go barefoot!! Because of this I am delighted to have found my perfect competition sock in the Noble Outfitters Over The Calf, Peddies, I hope they're lucky for us!

The Peddies feature a cushioned padding on the foot and ankle providing comfort and heel to toe protection covering all the sensitive, bony and sore parts of our feet. The ultra thin tight like calf offers comfort and mobility, with the added benefit of being made from 12% spandex they also help your leg glide easily into the most snug of boots and smoothly zip up un-interfering with the fit, ensuring a close contact when you ride with zero bulk.

The Peddies have opti-dry technology to wick away moisture and a breathable light weight panel on the top of the foot. For me there is nothing worse than a soggy sock after an intense lesson or having competed and these socks stood-up when put to the 'sweaty-foot' test, after all I can't possibly get the inside of my new boots moist!

All of these fabulous features are complimented by their colourful designs guaranteed to bring a smile to your face and momentarily take your mind off your fear stricken, stomach churning pre- competition nerves, reminding us all we're doing this for fun, yes,!

Gee Gee and Me Review: Back on Track Royal Quick Wraps

Thankfully the transition from Summer to Winter was kind to us equestrians, the dry weather meant Oscar continued to live out until late November as I firmly resisted the temptation to stable him overnight in a smart stable rug on a fluffy bed, this was because of Oscar's recent diagnosis of arthritis - high ringbone, back in September. The veterinary treatment to reduce the inflammation has been a great success and I am learning all the time about ways to continually manage the condition to ensure a long, happy and comfortable life for my best friend.

I knew the glorious conditions wouldn't last forever and after astonishing results using the Back on Track Mesh Rug - Oscar wears this almost 24/7 - I purchased a pair of Royal Quick Wraps ready for when the day came...

...which of course, it did.

The Back on Track Royal Quick Wraps increase circulation in the legs, this can reduce swelling, inflammations and speed up the healing process of injuries, they work using the same heat radiation principles of all therapeutic Back on Track products.

The above factors are important for Oscar because joint inflammation is the bodies way of fixing a problem, however in the case of arthritis, inflammation can be destructive and the cause of pain. Exercise and movement are key, however so is managing grazing and precious turnout land therefore for us, 24/7 pasture isn't possible during the Winter months and the fabulous Royal Quick Wraps have helped keep Oscar comfortable when stabled overnight.

The Royal Quick Wraps are made of two layers velcro'd together, this makes them super hygienic as the inner ceramic infused layer can be easily washed and dried when dirty, this is important because it is in direct contact with the skin, I wrap this around Oscar's lower leg and firmly velcro the second outer layer closed, the second layer is made of a durable neoprene fabric.

The wraps are available in four heights, 35, 40, 45 and 50cm, Oscar at 15hh comfortably wears the 40cm size. Overnight they stay in place and take less than a minute to whip off in a morning, once removed his legs are warm and comfortable, never hot and he soundly strides out of his stable, without any stiffness. I believe in the Royal Quick Wraps so much I would love a pair for his hind legs for prevention purposes rather than a cure, another worthy investment from Back on Track.

Haygain HG One+ Hay Steamer Review

4th April 2016 I filmed the tedious process of soaking Oscar's hay, something I endured daily throughout Winter, year after year because the days when I didn't he'd cough, a dry dusty cough, it wasn't chronic and something I had discussed with my vet...but it was always there in Winter, a few coughs when I first jumped on him in the morning, or as I walked him out to the paddock. It caused me so much torment that I didn't leave Oscar in anyone else's care last Winter being on a complete DIY livery yard asking the odd favour is acceptable but a line is drawn at soaking by a stopwatch and dragging heavy haynets out to drain.

I longed for a Haygain Hay Steamer and in desperation entered one competition every day during December 2015, only not to be chosen. Never one to be deterred I entered another Haygain Hay Steamer competition, this time in association with TopSpec in February seemed a distant memory when I received a surprise e-mail some two months later informing me I had won a HG One+, I was and still am overwhelmed because it really has changed both mine and Oscar's lives for the better.

The HG One+ is the smallest of the Haygain models designed to feed one horse and hold 8kg of forage either in a haynet or loose wedges, I weigh Oscar's hay and overnight allow 6kg packed into a haynet (the haynet is used for ease of steaming, I feed from the floor) which fits comfortably into the HG One+. Perfect in size, it takes up little space at the yard, lightweight enough for me to move it easily unassisted and it is portable so can be conveniently taken to shows/stay aways.

Using a Haygain Hay Steamer to steam your horses forage has been scientifically proven to eliminate harmful mould and fungal spores, bacteria and dust mites - research into this can be found on the Haygain website.

When I first read the instruction manual - which I actually did, from cover to cover and I would recommend everyone to do so before using a Haygain for your own safety - I was a little overwhelmed, how to set it up, where to plug it in, how to time the 60 minutes, but after the first week I had my routine. Now my hay steams as I muck out, ride, take to and bring in from the field, change rugs, make up haynets for the week, I also find due to the size of my HG One+ and because it is not overloaded with forage it takes less than 60 minutes to reach optimum temperature and I can leave hay in there if not yet ready to feed.

I could have easily reviewed my Haygain Hay Steamer in May however I'd only used it for one month when Oscar went out 24/7 for the Summer months meaning my Haygain wasn't in constant use and I wanted to be certain of it's features and benefits before sharing on Gee Gee and Me. I can now write with confidence having lightly used throughout the Summer and daily since October 2016, Oscar has not coughed, he has zero nasal discharge with clear lungs and breathing, whether we're schooling, hacking or going up the gallops - a regular jolly we enjoy. I have also steamed hay and left it to be fed within 24 hours with the same success meaning I can ask the odd favour and not feel I am putting on my fellow DIY liveries too much.

A Haygain should be an essential on every yard especially one where people soak their hay, long term it could be more cost effective, plus the health and increased performance benefits are clear to see and backed up by science. I may be a mere mortal who only owns one horse purely for pleasure yet I will never be without a Haygain Hay Steamer a worthy investment and when compared to made to measure boots, comfort bridles and saddles it's very reasonably priced...and shouldn't good health come before all of these things...?

Thank you Haygain and TopSpec - Oscar continues to be fed on TopSpec Lite Balancer and TopChop Zero, looking and feeling fabulous.

My Horse Box - December 2016

One Sunday evening My Horse Box or rather @myhorseboxUK exploded onto Twitter taking #EquineHour by storm, at 8pm my ears pricked, they had my forward to 9pm and they had my money, I was full of excited anticipation!

When I made my subscription all I could think about was what was inside...but when I opened the plastic wrapping to reveal the box I paused. My Horse Box have created a luxurious product - or should I call it a 'service', public duty to all equestrians - the black, glittering box was larger than I had expected, it's contents perfectly wrapped, almost too beautiful to tear apart. I loved opening it and savoured each item, taking the time to read the well presented index card as I went...

December 2016

  • Events Through A Lens - premium high quality print of Anna Power and Chesterfield Z competing at HOYS 2016, followed by a card headed up 'Hacking Out With...' featuring a Q&A with Anna.
  • Dressage Anywhere - free dressage test before the end of March 2017, simply ride and film your test, upload for judging, download your scoresheet and recieve 15% off your second test - I must pencil in a date for my unwilling other half or a parent to try this out, I wonder if they can call my test and film at the same time?
  • My Horse Box - personalised dandy brush from with firm nylon bristles, lovingly hand crafted in the UK, it's a delightful addition to my grooming kit and will be great at tackling mud during the dark months of 2017
  • Ruffle Snuffle - a brand Oscar and I already know and love included their Hooffed hand baked pony cookies in the box, made with no artificial preservatives, colours, flavour enhancers, salt or sugar - they're our favourite treat.
  • Tottie - SOCKS. Because everyone loves socks, knee high they feature a padded foot, arch support and ventilation panels to ensure they're warm yet breathable, in cute pink and turquoise.
  • Equine Happy - anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, all natural hoof conditioner....WITH GLITTER! Also containing tea tree oil, fluaseed oil and thyme oil to leave hoofs beautifully conditioned and sparkly. This is an adorable product that I can't wait to feature on a "Keeping Up With The Unicorns" blog - surely this product was made for us.
  • Safe Care Equine - a natural shampoo that is sud-free and removes scurf, made from plants and natural extracts it won't irritate the skin. Another product I am really excited by, I am grooming obsessed and take a huge pride in Oscar looking and feeling well. This year with him only having a chaser clip - as opposed to a full hunter clip - I have noticed scurf more than usual on his tack, rugs etc...therefore this product could be our new essential for Winter. Plus I have heard nothing but praise for Safe Care Equine products.
  • Plus discount vouchers for Tottie, an Events Through A Lens photo shoot and rugs at Horse Voucher.

The first question I got asked by a follower of Gee Gee and Me..."was it worth it, cost vs goods?" ...and yes.
Yes because of the giddy excitement it bought over me and yes because I am thankful for the new products I have learnt about such as the Dressage Anywhere voucher, something I had not considered taking part in before but I am hugely looking forward to using.

There isn't a set value per box but My Horse Box guarantee it will be in excess of the £29.99 payment, I am confident to say you will not be disappointed and you can sign up for a little as one month, which is all I did although I have to warn you I have since signed up for another and I am eagerly awaiting the arrival of January's. The way I see it, it's a sure way to beat the post Christmas blues...
